A question
So, on my introduction post someone commented and asked if he could ask me some controversial questions about the LDS church! I really couldn’t believe it. This is why I started this blog, to join the conversation. Well, I have been answering those questions in the comments on that first blog. And here is what I want to say today since all my reading is done for Sunday School tomorrow.
When an ordinary member of the LDS church gets asked questions about things that happened in the past that may cause some controversy today, what should they do?
Should they spend their time looking up a “historically correct” answer to the question?
Should they write down what they know of it even if they don’t have anything to back it up with?
Or does that subject even matter since it was in the past?
I think at some level, the latter is true, but then again I think to myself, no, our past is what defines us and makes us who we are. So with that said, the discussion has been about polygamy and Joseph Smith. Now I knew that we as a church practiced polygamy back in the day (exact dates I don’t know and are never very good with), but I don’t know the specific details because . . . . I don’t really feel that it something I need to dwell on. It doesn’t bother me. I know it was revelation from God to practice polygamy, so I don’t question it. Well, I question it and the Holy Ghost testifies to me that it is true (Moroni 10:4-5). So I don’t really care that it happened one way or another.
On certain questions about the church, I think they need to be answered with a back up source. On some, they are questions of faith, so they only need the testifying power of the Holy Ghost to convey the truth. That is what I love about the gospel. The Holy Ghost guides us and we can know of things of a surety through him.
Please, if anyone has any comments on this, post them. Also, post this blog for others to see. Let everyone know about it! Join the conversation!
