A Great Promise

by President Marion G. Romney:

“I feel certain that if, in our homes, parents will read from the Book of Mormon prayerfully and regularly, both by themselves and with their children, the spirit of that great book will come to permeate our homes and all who dwell therein. The spirit of reverence will increase; mutual respect and consideration for each other will grow. The spirit of contention will depart. Parents will counsel their children in greater love and wisdom. Children will be more responsive and submissive to the counsel of their parents. Righteousness will increase. Faith, hope, and charity—the pure love of Christ—will abound in our homes and lives, bringing in their wake peace, joy, and happiness” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1980, 90; or Ensign, May 1980, 67).

There are many things that come from reading the Book of Mormon. A testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel. A greater faith in Christ. Strength when we are weak. Knowledge of the things our Heavenly Father wants us to do. In addition to all those, President Romney promises us that we will have an increase of reverence in our home, that the spirit of contention will depart, and that our children will be more responsive and submissive to our counsel. I can not speak for everyone, but for me those promises are enough for me to read the Book of Mormon everyday with my family.

The way I see things is that if I put my trust in the Lord, He will not lead me a stray. And when I say trust I mean, believing in the promises he gives us. Believing the words of the prophets. Believing the words in the Book of Mormon. So promises like, “Keep my commandments and ye shall prosper in the land,” found throughout the first part of the Book of Mormon, mean that if I keep the Lord’s commandments, I will prosper. I will have enough of the temporal things of the world if I do the spiritual things first. So when I hear a promise such as this one, I read the scriptures with my family and then when things are happy and joyful, I thank Heavenly Father for those blessings He promised.

I am so very excited to grow closer to God through daily study of His words. In lesson 1 this week, there are several scriptures that we are asked to prayerfully study. Today is Wednesday, so I have three more days to study those scriptures. I just really wanted to emphasize the promises that we have been given if we study the Book of Mormon.
